Print PageShareNew Jersey's Lifeline benefit program helps you pay your gas and electric bills if you are 65 years old or older, have limited income and live with a disability. The Lifeline benefit provides assistance for only electricity and natural gas. Other fuels, such as bottled or propane gas, oil, coal, or wood, aren't covered.
New Jerey's program offers three ways to help:
- Lifeline Credit Program: Adds $225 to your gas and electric bill accounts each year.
- Tenants Lifeline Assistance Program: Gives you an annual $225 check if your rent includes your gas and electric bills.
- Special Utility Supplement: Gives you up to $18.75 a month to help pay gas and electric bills if you have Supplemental Security Income.
Supplemental Security Income (or SSI) is extra money from the federal government that helps pay for everyday expenses if you are an older adult or live with a disability. If you receive SSI, you shouldn't apply for Lifeline, as this benefit is automatically included in your SSI checks.
