The NYS School Tax Relief (STAR) program can free you from having to pay some school district taxes that are part of your property tax bill. There are two types of school tax breaks available to homeowners who meet income guidelines:

Basic STAR: This tax break helps you if your home is where you live year round and you meet the STAR income levels. Basic STAR excuses you from paying school taxes equal to a certain amount of the estimated value of your home. The estimated value is the dollar amount used to decide how much you will have to pay in property taxes.

Enhanced STAR: This tax break helps you if you are 65 years of age or older and own a home. Enhanced STAR relieves you of a tax amount higher than Basic STAR. It will protect you from paying an amount of school taxes equal to the full estimated value of your home.
