AARP Doughnut Hole Calculator

2 min read

AARP created an online, interactive tool called the “Doughnut Hole Calculator” which can help you with your Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage (Part D). By using the calculator, you can find out if you will fall into the coverage gap (also known as the doughnut hole). If you reach the coverage gap, you will have to pay the full price of your medications, until you have spent enough out-of-pocket on your prescription drugs to reach the catastrophic cost level. The Doughnut Hole Calculator can help you find plans that offer less expensive drugs to help you lower your total drug costs to delay or avoid reaching the coverage gap.

The calculator figures out your drug costs for each month of the year by using the same plan information and drug pricing that the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) use in the Medicare Drug Plan Finder. Then, if you will reach the coverage gap, the calculator will tell you which month you will enter the coverage gap. The calculator also helps you find up to three different medications that work similarly to your current prescriptions but could cost you less. You will also be able to print letters to take to your doctors to start discussions about whether the less expensive drugs can be used. Even if you do not think you will reach the doughnut hole, you can still use the calculator to find out whether you may be able to save money.
