This program can provide you with special services if you are an older adult and are blind or have low vision. A counselor conducts an initial interview to discuss your concerns about vision loss, your medical background, and your living and family situation. They help you create a plan for services.

A counselor will work with you directly to build skills that can help you remain independent in your home and adjust to challenges you meet on a daily basis. Services may include:

  • Counseling and guidance
  • Training on how to manage personal care and daily tasks
  • Labeling and organizing items around the home
  • Safe cooking techniques
  • Adjustment to blindness
  • Referral to community resources
  • Low-vision evaluations
  • Orientation and mobility training
  • Instruction in the use of adaptive computer software

How do I apply?

To apply, please call the South Carolina Commission for the Blind at 1-888-335-5951 (toll-free) or 1-803-898-8731.
