Limited Income Newly Eligible Transition Program (LINET)

LINET is a Medicare program administered by Humana that helps you get prescription drug coverage right away if you qualify and don’t have any other drug coverage. This coverage is temporary, usually lasting one to two months, so you have time to pick a Medicare Part D plan. LINET can also pay you back for prescriptions you paid for out of pocket during your temporary coverage period.

What does LINET cover?

LINET helps pay for prescription drugs that are covered under Medicare Part D. Some drugs are not covered under Part D—see the list of excluded drugs here. If you qualify, you can get temporary coverage for your medications right away.

What's covered under your LINET coverage:

  • Temporary prescription coverage (1-2 months)
  • No monthly fees
  • Low-cost prescriptions
  • Covers all Medicare Part D approved medications
  • You can use any pharmacy
  • You may be able to get money back for prescriptions you already paid for

How do I know if I'm eligible for LINET?

You may qualify for LINET if:

  • You already have Medicare Part D Extra Help, and also:
    • Have Medicare and Medicaid
    • Get Supplemental Security Income (SSI) but don’t have Medicaid
    • Have a Medicare Savings Program (MSP), such as QMB, SLMB, or QI
    • Applied for Extra Help and got an approval letter
  • You don’t have other prescription drug coverage, such as:
    • A Medicare Part D plan
    • A Retiree Drug Subsidy (RDS) plan
    • Veterans Affairs (VA) drug coverage
  • You are NOT in a Medicare Advantage plan that includes drug coverage
  • You live in one of the 50 U.S. states or Washington, D.C.

How do I apply?

Most people are automatically enrolled in LINET by Medicare. Look out for a purple letter from Medicare if you are eligible.

If you aren’t automatically enrolled, you can sign up at the pharmacy by showing proof of having Medicare Part D Extra Help, such as:

  • A letter from Social Security or Medicare saying you were approved for Extra Help
  •  A Medicaid award letter with your coverage dates
  •  A state Medicaid system record showing you qualify

You can also download and print the LINET application, fill it out and mail it to:

LINET
P.O. Box 14310
Lexington, KY 40512-4310

Or fax the completed application to 1-877-210-5592

Need a prescription right away?

If you haven’t heard from LINET but need your medicine, follow these steps:

  • Take your prescription and Medicare ID card to the pharmacy
  • Ask the pharmacist to bill LINET using:
    • BIN: 015599
    • PCN: 05440000
  • If you or your pharmacist need help, call LINET at 1-800-783-1307

Already paid for a prescription?

If you paid for prescription drugs before you were enrolled in LINET, you may be able to get your money back. However, not all LINET coverage is retroactive. If you receive a yellow CMS letter (No. 11154) stating that you’ve been auto-enrolled in a Part D plan, retroactive coverage does not apply.

If you do have retroactive coverage and want to request reimbursement for prescriptions, start by checking the first page of your LI NET Welcome Letter to find your LINET coverage dates. Then, follow the steps on the Prescription Drug Claim Form that came with the letter to request a refund. You have up to 36 months from the date you got your prescription to ask for reimbursement.

If you need a drug claim form, you can download and print it here.

How long can I keep LINET?

LINET prescription drug coverage is temporary, usually lasting 1 to 2 months. This gives you time to pick a Medicare Part D plan that works for you. If you don’t choose one, Medicare will enroll you in a basic plan.

Who can I call for help?

If you need help applying for LINET or have questions about this program, you can:

  • Call the LINET Help Desk at 1-800-783-1307 (TTY: 711), available 8 a.m. – 11 p.m. ET
  • Call your state Medicaid office: Find your state's phone number at Medicaid.gov
  • Read the LINET Program Evidence of Coverage document for details on costs, benefits, and how to file a complaint or visit Humana's LINET page for more information.
