Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority Senior and Disabled Reduced Fare Program

This program allows you to pay a reduced fare on all District of Columbia bus and rail routes operated by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (also called WMATA). You may show proof of age or a Metro Disability ID Card to ride buses or purchase reduced fare passes.

Train and bus services are available for all WMATA transit routes managed by the provider. An overview of WMATA’s operations include the following:

  • Metrorail: WMATA’s train system serves 91 stations in Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia. In Virginia, train routes operate in the cities of Alexandria, Fairfax, and Falls Church and the counties of Arlington, Fairfax, and Prince William. In Maryland, Metrorail provides service from the counties of Montgomery and Prince George. To locate a Metrorail train stop, view WMATA’s station list.
  • Metrobus: WMATA offers more than 11,500 bus stops in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia. The system has approximately 1,500 buses traveling across 325 routes. To find a bus that meets your travel needs, use WMATA’s trip planner.

How do I apply?

If you are an older adult, you can pay the reduced fare at WMATA's sales offices. If you have a disability, you should obtain the Metro Disability ID Card by contacting the Transit Accessibility Office at 1-202-962-2700.

You can also apply for the Reduced Fare Program by printing and filling out the application form. The application form must be provided in person at a WMATA office. The program does not accept mailed or faxed forms. Please contact the program for more information.
