Chicago Taxi Access Program (TAP)

Learn More About This Program

What is the Chicago Taxi Access Program?

The Chicago Taxi Access Program (TAP) is a program offered through Pace, a bus and paratransit service in the Chicago area. This program helps people who are approved for ADA Paratransit rides use regular Chicago taxis instead. If you are in the TAP program, you only pay the first $2 of your taxi ride if your trip starts in Chicago. TAP helps pay up to $30 of the rest of the ride.

You must pay:

  • Any amount over $30
  • Any extra taxi charges (like if the driver waits for you)
  • Any tip for the driver

Am I eligible for Chicago TAP?

Anyone who is certified for ADA Paratransit can sign up for the Chicago TAP. To qualify, you must be certified by the Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) as eligible for ADA Paratransit services. People with temporary eligibility do not qualify for TAP. Keep in mind, when your ADA eligibility ends, your TAP card will also stop working.

How do I enroll in Chicago TAP?

To sign up for the Chicago TAP, you will need to have your ADA Paratransit ID number ready. To sign up online, go to Pace’s TAP website and fill out the form at the bottom of the page. You can also call Pace at 833-722-3827 (PACE-TAP) for help applying.

Your TAP card will be mailed to the address you have with the RTA. You’ll need to activate your card before you can use it. Please allow up to 3 weeks for your card to arrive. Instructions on how to use your TAP card will come with it, or you can visit the TAP User Guide.

How do I use my Chicago TAP card?

Once your TAP card is set up, you can buy rides online, by mail, or in person. You can buy up to 60 rides per week. Rides last for one year and cannot be refunded or transferred.

At the end of your ride, simply swipe your TAP card in the back of the taxi to use one ride. You will pay $2 and Pace will pay the taxi company for the rest of the ride cost.
