What is the Maryland Senior Tax Program?
The Maryland Senior Tax Credit helps you pay less in taxes each year by lowering the total amount that you owe. To get this tax credit, you must:
- Be 65 or older
- Make $100,000 or less if you file taxes alone
- Make $150,000 or less if you file with your spouse, as a surviving spouse, or as head of household
If you qualify, you can get:
- $1,000 if you file alone
- $1,750 if you file with a spouse
Note: Adjusted gross income is the money you earned in a year, after subtracting a few costs, like retirement savings or certain medical costs. It’s what the government uses to decide how much in taxes you should pay.
How do I get the Maryland Senior Tax Credit?
To get this tax credit, you need to fill out Maryland Form 502CB and include it with your Maryland income tax form (Form 502) when you file your taxes for the year. If someone else is doing your taxes for you, make sure they have a copy of Form 502CB or are able to print it out. These forms are different each year, so be sure the form you use shows the correct tax year at the top.
If you are approved for the credit, $1,000 or $1,750 (depending on your filing status) will be subtracted from the total amount you owe in taxes that year.
