If you’re an older adult or have a disability and housing costs are stretching your budget, Iowa’s Disabled and Senior Citizens Property Tax Credit and Rent Reimbursement Program can help lower those costs by reducing property taxes or reimbursing part of the rent you’ve paid. 

How does the Disabled and Senior Citizens Property Tax Credit and Rent Reimbursement Program work? 

The Disabled and Senior Citizens Property Tax Credit and Rent Reimbursement Program helps both homeowners and renters living in Iowa. Qualifying homeowners save on property taxes and renters receive a reimbursement for part of the rent they paid the previous year. The program is designed to make housing more affordable for older Iowans and Iowans with disabilities.  

To be eligible for the Property Tax Credit, you must:  

  • Be age 65 or older by December 31 of the previous year, or  

  • have a disability and be at least 18 years of age. 

  • Meet income limits. 

  • Be an Iowa resident. 

  • Own a home and pay property tax (including mobile, manufactured, or modular homes) 

To be eligible for Rent Reimbursement, you must: 

  • Be age 65 or older by December 31 of the previous year, or  

  • have a disability and be at least 18 years of age. 

  • Have household income below $ 26,219 

  • Be an Iowa resident 

  • Rent a home that is subject to property tax. 

Note: The amount of rent reimbursement changes yearly and is calculated using a set formula. 

How do I apply for this program?  

To apply for the Property Tax Credit, you must file an application with your county treasurer by June 1st before the fiscal year when the property taxes are due. You can find your county treasurer here. The application changes each year and lists that year’s income limits. You can find the Property Tax Credit application and other forms on the Iowa Department of Revenue website

To apply for Rent Reimbursement, you can complete an online application through Department of Health and Human Services website. 

  • 2024 claims can be filed until December 31, 2026

  • 2023 claims can be filed until December 31, 2025. 

Note: There are several agencies that can help you apply for Rent Reimbursement. If you are 60 or older, contact Iowa’s Aging and Disability Resource Center at 1-866-468-7887 or visit their website. If you are under 60, contact Targeted Case Management at 515-725-3350
