Home Sharing

Learn More About This Program

Shared Housing helps you find a roommate by matching people with extra space in their homes with someone who is looking for a new place to live. Having a roommate can help you save money on rent or utility bills. Shared Housing can also match you with a roommate who has a specific skill you are in need of, like cooking. The roommate will agree to provide the skill in exchange for a lower rent. Everyone who takes part in Shared Housing will always have the privacy of their own bedroom, while sharing common areas of the home, such as the kitchen or dining room.

You will work with a Shared Housing counselor who coordinates your search for a roommate by managing the following services:

  • Interviewing applicants
  • Guiding each person through the process
  • Providing introductory meetings
  • Processing a background check
  • Following up on questions or concerns
  • Reviewing the home that is available

Please note: Depending on your local Shared Housing counseling location, you may have to pay for criminal background checks and credit reports.
