The Alaska Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired provides you with services if you are blind or how low vision. Services can include:

  • Employment services: Get help with job development and placement, on-the-job technology assessments, and coaching for keeping your job.
  • Daily living activities: Learn how to safely prepare meals, label clothes and food to be able to easily find them, clean your home, and go shopping. Also get help with financial and other record-keeping skills and organization.
  • Orientation and mobility: Learn safe methods for moving around your home and traveling within residential and business areas.
  • Braille: Learn to read and write in Braille.
  • Assistive technology: Get different types of equipment to help with tasks, such as computer-talking and screen-enlargement programs, voice recorders, scanning and reading systems, and other items that provide opportunities to participate fully in our changing world.
  • Manual skills: Learn how to plan, design, and create objects out of wood and other materials.

If you are an older adult, you can participate in the Visually Impaired Senior Alaskans (V.I.S.A.) Program, which can provide you with services that help you remain independent in your home. Services may include:

  • Information on how to organize your home, so items can be found easily
  • Training on how to walk safely around the house and on the street
  • Education on how to use devices, such as magnifiers, eye drop cups, medication boxes, talking watches, and writing guides
