Do I have to pay to use BenefitsCheckUp?

No, BenefitsCheckUp is free! Simply enter your ZIP code to browse the programs available in your area. You can also enter additional information to see if you may be eligible for certain programs. From there, we'll show you how to contact the agencies that can help and where you can apply online.

How do I check my eligibility or see if I quality for programs? 

It’s easy! Just click the "See if you may be eligible" button, answer some questions, and we'll let you know if you may be eligible for certain programs.   

Can I submit an application directly on BenefitsCheckUp?

No, but BenefitsCheckUp will connect you with the relevant local and federal agencies, so you can apply online through them. You can do this by clicking "Apply Online." We'll take you directly to the program's website. If you prefer to apply by mail, we also provide forms you can download, if available, so you can send them to the agency.

How do I sign up or qualify for SNAP? 

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) helps older adults afford the nourishing food they need to stay healthy. SNAP considers the size of your household, defined as “everyone who lives together and purchases and prepares meals together,” when calculating your eligibility. Learn more about SNAP here.

How can I get help paying for food, health care, and other bills?

The easiest way is to use our free BenefitsCheckUp tool. It will connect you to programs that can help you afford groceries, prescriptions, health care, housing, utilities, and more.

What are the income requirements for Medicaid?

The income guidelines for Medicaid are determined by your state and the specific program. You can enter your ZIP code on BenefitsCheckUp and select "Health Care & Medication" to browse by the programs that are available. For more detailed information, reach out your state’s Medicaid agency

How do I get help finding housing assistance? 

Your local Area Agency on Aging (AAA) can help you find housing resources in your area. You can find help by calling 1-800-677-1116 or by emailing eldercarelocator@usaging.org.

I’m a grandparent with custody of my grandchildren. Is there any help for us?

You can learn more about reverse mortgages, how they differ from home equity loans, and how much they may cost by reading our resource. NCOA's official guide, Use Your Home to Stay at Home©, explains the advantages and disadvantages of reverse mortgages and provides additional resources to help older homeowners stay in their own homes.

I am about to be or am homeless—what do I do?

Reach out to your Area Agency on Aging (AAA) for local resources. Most programs included in BenefitsCheckUp require an application and can take time to process and get approval. You can find help by calling 1-800-677-1116 or by emailing eldercarelocator@usaging.org.

I am disabled—how can I look for help?

Contact your local Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC). ADRCs are local organizations that help older adults, people with disabilities, and their caregivers find the services they need to live independently. Find ADRCs near you through the Eldercare Locator. You can find help by calling 1-800-677-1116 or by emailing eldercarelocator@usaging.org.

Can I get assistance with food, rent, and utilities if I am not an older adult?

BenefitsCheckUp is a resource for adults age 65 and older and individuals with disabilities. However, there are programs that do not have these requirements. To find them, enter your ZIP code on our homepage and browse benefits in your area.
