Property Tax Deferral for Senior Citizens & Disabled Persons


This program provides you a way to delay payment of property tax. Through this program, you can postpone paying the taxes on your primary residence. The state will charge interest on any property tax you delay. The delayed taxes and all interest charged must be repaid to the state if you sell or transfer your residence.

Am I eligible?

You may be able to take part in this program if you are a homeowner, you are 65 years of age or older, and you have a limited income. You can also apply if you are 57 years of age or older and the surviving spouse or domestic partner of a person who was receiving a deferral at the time of his/her death. In addition, you must have been a resident of the state for the entire calendar year and have lived in the property you seek a deferral on for at least 6 months out of the year. Further, you must own and occupy the home and pay property tax on it. If you have a reverse mortgage you should contact your lender to see if they will allow you to take part in this program.
