Extra income can make a real difference if you are struggling to meet basic needs. The Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program provides monthly payments to older adults and people with disabilities who have very limited income and resources. If approved, you could get up to $943 a month or up to $1,415 for a couple.
SSI already helps more than 2 million older adults. Could you benefit from SSI too? Check if you qualify and get a "protective filing date" with this online tool. This date is then used to decide when your payments start if approved. After reviewing how to qualify for SSI, the next step is to apply.
How do I apply for SSI?
You must apply for SSI through the Social Security Administration (SSA). You can start the application process online by answering a set of questions here. This takes 5–10 minutes and asks for basic information like:
- Name, date of birth, and Social Security number
- Mailing address, telephone number, and email address (optional)
- Name, phone number, and email address (optional) of someone helping you apply
The SSA will then make you an appointment at your local Social Security office. You will get a letter in 7–14 days with the date and time. During that appointment, an SSA employee will help you apply for benefits.
If you cannot start the application process online or prefer not to, you can make your appointment by calling 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778).
Who can help me apply for SSI?
During your appointment, an SSA employee can help complete your application with information you give. They may be able to help you gather documents and can provide an interpreter if needed.
Likewise, a family member or friend can help by completing forms, calling the Social Security office, gathering and providing information, interpreting, and receiving mail for you.
What documents will I need?
You will need to provide documents that confirm you meet SSI's guidelines. You must submit original documents or certified copies; the SSA will return them to you.
Listed below are types of documents you can use for each guideline. You may not need all the documents listed. If you are not sure, the SSA will tell you what is needed.
